Oliver's Success Story
In-page navigation
When Oliver enrolled in Home Care Aide Training classes at Everett High School, he knew he was interested in healthcare. What he didn't know was how quickly those classes would help shape his future.
Through the Healthcare Academy, Oliver gained hands-on experience in personal care. His high school class gave him the opportunity to earn his Home Care Aide certification and continue on the path toward becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.
"The program really confirmed that this is what I want to do with my career," Oliver said.
The experience extended beyond the classroom. With support from his instructors and Career and Technical Education staff, Oliver secured a job as an in-home caregiver while still in high school. The role allowed him to earn a paycheck, build real-world healthcare experience, and develop skills he can carry into his future career.
Those experiences helped Oliver earn acceptance to his dream school, Emory University, where he plans to pursue nursing.
Oliver credits much of his success to taking advantage of the opportunities available to him.
"My success is not because I'm more special than any other student," he said. "I saw the opportunity, and I took the opportunity."
For Oliver, the Healthcare Academy provided more than certifications and career experience. It also helped him build friendships, confidence, and a deeper understanding of patient care. Through hands-on learning, students practice both technical healthcare skills and the communication and compassion needed to support others.
